April is Distracted Driving Awareness Month

April 6, 2021

According to the National Highway Traffic Administration (NHTSA), “By driving distracted, you’re robbing yourself of seconds that you may need to avoid a close call or deadly crash.”

We all depend on some form of motor vehicle transportation daily – getting to work, driving our kids to school, going to the doctor or grocery store and, for many Americans, driving is their primary occupation.

It’s easy to forget how dangerous driving can be. Each year, tens of thousands of Americans die in motor vehicle crashes and millions more are seriously injured. The top causes of motor vehicle crashes year after year are speeding, impairment and distraction and most injuries and fatalities from motor vehicle crashes result from not wearing seatbelts.

What do these causes have in common? They are all personal choices and, therefore, are avoidable. In other words, we can make the choice to drive undistracted.

As part of Distracted Driving Awareness Month, Lyons will be publishing a series of weekly Risk Control Service blogs to help you and your organization build a successful safe driving program. These blogs will focus on improving driving safety with an emphasis on distracted driving, situational awareness, complacency as well as provide insight into the commercial auto insurance market.

Additionally, we’ll round out the month with a Distracted Driving webinar at 10am on Thursday, April 29 to help turn these ideas into action plans for success for you and your organization.

Please visit the National Safety Council and NHTSA for additional information and resources on combating distracted driving.

Give yourself and your team the valuable seconds needed to avoid a crash by eliminating distractions.
